HOW IT BEGAN In 1951 I went to the Festival of Britain which left a lasting impression on me. Unlike most people, I was similarly enthusiastic about the Millennium Dome exhibition and went in January and again in August. The following year (2001) I was browsing in an antiques fair at Great Malvern when I found a magazine article about the 1938 Empire Exhibition in Glasgow. A few minutes later I found a postcard showing a superb tower at the same exhibition. I did some research and was amazed at the size and standard of the temporary buildings. This led me to investigate other expos and world's fairs - especially those in the 1930s in Paris, Chicago, New York and San Francisco. Using internet auctions I started to collect original guides, brochures and artifacts. |
This photograph of me, with my sister, was taken at the Festival of Britain Pleasure Gardens in 1951. |
