THEATRE VISITS - 2008 |
In 2008 I went to more productions than in any previous year - they are listed below. Highlights for me were: Marguerite, which I thought deserved a longer run; Brief Encounter, for shear originality and fun; Strictly Gershwin with ENB, not forgetting the wonderful Darren and Lilia; West Side Story, for the stupendous dancing; Beth Rowley -great songs and an amazing voice; The Railway Children, produced by York Theatre Royal at the National Railway Museum with a real 1870 steam train, a great script and an incredibly ingenious production. My favourite performances were by Sarah Quintrell in The Railway Children, Lysette Anthony and Fiona Button in Hay Fever and Robin Simpson in the physically demanding role of Stan Laurel. Most disappointing was Brian Conley in The Music Man - yet he got very good reviews. I thought he was excellent in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but as Harold Hill I found him most unconvincing. In addition to these I saw 16 shows on the P&O Oriana. The superb theatre company sang wonderfully, the costumes were lavish and the dancers were first class - Daniel Mallinder being particularly outstanding. |
