THEATRE VISITS - 2010

NEXT

In 2010 I visited the theatre fewer times than usual because I spent 15 weeks on a cruise at the beginning of the year. Also, unusually, I didn't visit London this year. However I did see two brilliant productions in Sydney and Singapore: Spring Awakening, with a charismatic performance from Andrew Hazzard; and To Kill a Mockingbird in which Brendon Fenandez was a superb Atticus Finch. Another highlight was Pygmalion at the Royal Exchange which was wonderfully acted and directed to perfection by Greg Hersov. At Oldham I saw a play cleverly adapted from the Blackburn autobiography, The Road to Nab End. Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art, though ingenious and brilliantly acted, didn't live up to my expectations. A riveting play, The Country (now enjoying a West End revival),was very well produced at the Thwaites Empire in Blackburn by drama student, Liz Stevenson. Her brother Nick composed some excellent incidental music.

The Headliners on the P & O Aurora were, as usual, highly talented performers singing and dancing in 12 different shows, all of which I saw twice! As an example, At The Hop involved 31 songs and 38 costumes. I saw 46 cabaret artistes - Robert Meadmore, Stuart Gillies, Allan Stewart and Des O'Connor among the best.
