HOW IT BEGAN
In the mid-fifties I had a regular weekly order for the Eagle and used to cut out and keep the centre spread that was a feature of the middle pages. I still have 143 of them, 75 of which were drawn by L. Ashwell Wood who drew similar cut-away illustrations for Modern Wonder magazine in the 1930s (see my Modern Wonder collection). I particularly admire his style and have bound his drawings together in two albums. Other contributors included Laurence Dunn, 'Redmill' and 'Fisher' - who was Walkden Fisher, a Southport artist and early model slot-car racing enthusiast. |
