EAGLE CENTRE SPREADS |
HOW IT BEGAN In the mid-fifties I had a regular weekly order for the Eagle and used to cut out and keep the centre spread that was a feature of the middle pages. I still have 143 of them, 75 of which were drawn by L. Ashwell Wood who drew similar cut-away illustrations for Modern Wonder magazine in the 1930s (see my Modern Wonder collection). I particularly admire his style and have bound his drawings together in two albums. Other contributors included Laurence Dunn, 'Redmill' and 'Fisher' - who was Walkden Fisher, a Southport artist and early model slot-car racing enthusiast. |
Above are four examples of L. Ashwell Wood's artwork from the Eagle comic |
In 1988 a book of L Ashwell Wood's cut-aways was published - and yet another one in 2008. The three illustrations on the right are, from top to bottom, by Fisher, Dunn and Redmill |
