COMICS AND CHILDREN'S MAGAZINES |
ON THE LEFT IS THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR A PAGE FROM MARTY GIRLS MAGAZINE DATED MARCH 21th BUT NO YEAR - POSSIBLY 1960, THE YEAR OF ITS LAUNCH. IT CLAIMED TO BE THE "FIRST EVER PHOTO ROMANCE WEEKLY", ALTHOUGH IT ONLY HAD A SHORT LIFE. THE STORIES WERE DIRECTED BY BERYL VUOLO WHO DREW UP THE SCENES FROM THE SCRIPT, HAD THEM PHOTOGRAPHED AND THEN ASSEMBLED THEM AS SEEN HERE. THE ARTWORK IS 44cm BY 55cm WHICH IS ONE-AND-A-HALF TIMES THE SIZE OF THE MAGAZINE. I CAME ACROSS IT WHILST BROWSING IN THE WONDERFUL SNOOPERS PARADISE IN BRIGHTON AND BOUGHT IT FOR A FEW POUNDS IN ABOUT 2000. |
ABOVE ARE EDITIONS OF THE MAGNET AND THE GEM, PART OF A COLLECTION OF 17 FROM THE 1930s THAT BELONGED TO MY WIFE'S SECOND COUSIN. HIS DAUGHTER - HAVING SEEN MY COLLECTIONS ON THIS WEBSITE - PASSED THEM ON TO ME IN 2009 ALONG WITH A COLLECTION OF CHOCOLATE BOXES, MEDICINE, TOBACCO AND SWEET TINS THAT CAN BE SEEN ON MY OTHER PAGES. |
